Dinner and A Movie!



Don't Forget Our First Monthly Movie for Teens

... is this Thursday, September 24, at 4:00pm in the library program room. You bring the eats; we'll provide the movie and drinks.

In honor of banned books' week ( September 27 - October 3) this month's movie is a challenged book turned movie (rated PG-13). A challenge is an attempt by a specific group to have a book removed from the public arena.

Dr. Seuss Essay Contest - Win Money for College



Dr. Seuss's Oh, the Place You'll Go! College Scholarship Program

Write an original and creative essay of less than 500 words drawing clear connections back to Dr. Seuss’s Oh, the Places You’ll Go! and fully answering the question: "Thinking about the book, Oh, The Places You’ll Go!, what kinds of opportunities and challenges do you think your education will present in the future?". The first place winner will receive $5,000 for college. This contest is open to all high school seniors. Essays due no later than February 15, 2010.

Wednesday Club Rides Again! - Part 2


Wednesday Club Resumes (again) This Wednesday, September 23

Due to an unexpected logistical SNAFU, the Wednesday Club did not meet on Wednesday, September 16 and therefore will kick off it's new year this Wednesday, September 23. I hear there will be pizza!

Come display your creative side making colorful decoupage jars to hold pens, pencils, or treats. Not interested in jars, you can make room decorations too.

As always, supplies and snacks will be provided. No registration is necessary, but Ms. Kathy does require a signed behavior contract. A photo release signed by your parent or guardian may land you on our blog or website. Ask Ms. Kathy for details.

Essay Writing Contest - Win Money For College


2010 JFK Profiles in Courage Essay Contest

Write an original and creative essay of less than 1,000 words demonstrating an understanding of President Kennedy's definition of political courage. Winners can win money for themselves, their teacher and for college. Open to teens in grades nine through twelve at public, private, or home schools and to students under twenty enrolled in high school correspondence/GED programs in any of the fifty states. Students must enroll on-line. Essays must be submitted on-line or postmarked no later than January 9, 2010.

NEW YA PROGRAM - SCRAPBOOKING


SCRAPBOOKING WITH YOUR YA LIBRARIANS

All Newport teens and tweens are invited to join the YA librarians in the children’s program room from 4:30 – 6:30pm once each month for scrapbooking. Teens in our Summer Reading Program enjoyed this activity so much we decided to continue it.

The library will provide snacks and scrapbooking supplies. You provide the pictures and scrapbooks. Teens who wish to bring their own supplies for personal use or to share are welcome to do so. Our scrapbooking schedule for the fall is as follows:

Monday, September 14; Monday, October 5; Monday, November 9; and Monday, December 7.

Have Dinner - Watch a Movie - Free at the Library

All Newport teens and tweens are invited to join us in the library program room from 4:00 – 6:00pm once each month. Bring your own dinner (take-out or brown bag); we’ll provide the movie and drinks. Explore holiday and event themed movies as well as books made into movies with your friendly YA librarians.

Thursday, September 24 we begin with a salute to Banned Books Week, September 26 – October 3, celebrating the freedom to read. We will be showing a challenged book turned movie (rated PG-13). “A challenge is an attempt to remove or restrict materials, based upon the objections of a person or group.” (www.ala.org/ala/issuesadvocacy/banned/aboutbannedbooks/index.cfm, August 25, 2009) Additional challenged or banned books will be displayed and available for check-out... Mark Twain, S.E. Hinton, Judy Blume, J.D. Salinger, Toni Morrison, Walter Dean Myers and many other banned authors will be there (in spirit and print) for this kick-off event. Don’t miss it!

Looking forward, on Thursday, October 22, we'll give you nightmares (rated PG). A selection of Halloween and other horror stories from the Young Adult section will be showcased to accompany this movie. The November movie is yet to be determined. Join us Thursday, November 19 to find out what we choose…. or if you just can’t wait, check this blog or the library facebook page for an announcement. On, Thursday, December 17, the hilarious Bill Murray provides a new take on an old story (rated PG-13). A selection of holiday books will be available to borrow for some cozy winter reading during the school break.
