Jake ReinventedJake Reinvented by Gordon Korman

My rating: 3 of 5 stars

This is The Great Gatsby for the teenager. Jake hosts "the" party to be at every Friday, is an awesome long snapper for the football team and is the guy everyone wants to know. He only wants to know Didi, girlfriend of the womanizing team quarterback. Good luck Jake. Despite knowing, because I've read The Great Gatsby, that Jake would fall in the end, I still found myself hoping there was some way out of it. Apparently I am a sucker for the underdog. Korman, as usual, gives readers a well crafted, entrancing story. It is a book I would have stayed up all night to finish if I didn't have little ones to care for the next day!

And now, she is offering to help you get started. She is offering a writer's workshop to help unblock the writer in you. If you've ever wanted to try writing, why not now?!

Solar Distiller Discussion

We cut 2 gallon jugs in half, added one inch of water mixed with dirt in one jug and salt in the other. Then we placed a cup in the jug and secured plastic wrap to the top with tape (no air holes). Finally we placed a stone on the plastic wrap directly over, but not touching the cup.

So.... what happened? Did your experiment work? If not, why do you think it might have failed. Remember, we learn as much from our failures as we do our successes.

This books is why I'll never write a memoir. Daily life is ho hum. It does, however, demonstrate the immense capacity for the teen mind to make mountains out of mole hills.

Geek Charming Geek Charming by Robin Palmer

My rating: 3 of 5 stars
A unique twist on what could be a "dead horse" story. I love that their happily ever after is not a romantic relationship between the two of them. The writing is mediocre, but this is a fresh and realistic look at high school popularity contests and "clicheness". I like this book and I think you will too.

Required School Reading Lists

The young adult department has reading lists for all area high schools, Thompson Middle School and many area private schools. We've collected many of the books into a summer long display wall for easy access. Don't see what you want? Just ask a friendly librarian for help. It may be elsewhere in the library or available from another library.

Happy reading!
