Speak by Laurie Halse AndersonMy rating: 4 of 5 stars
Melinda, a nice, average middle-schooler, becomes an outcast just before she begins her first year in high school. Her friends turn against her and think she's become peculiar, her parents are at a loss to explain her failing grades, and her teachers have all--or almost all--given up on her. But Melinda's sudden change of personality, and her equally sudden break with her oldest and best friend, have a very simple, though secret, explanation. Anderson brings the high school experience to life, along with some of the darker aspects of teen relationships. This is a can't-put-it-down book.

I read Speak at a point in my life where I felt alone. Reading Melinda's story made me feel like she was there with me. The book was written in an unusual format, yet it was so perfect. You were with Melinda throughout the whole story, in her mind, and in the deepest roots of her thoughts. I would recommend this story to anyone who feels like they need to reconnect with themselves. Speak truly has stayed with me, and it will stay with you too.
