LBD: It's a Girl ThingLBD: It's a Girl Thing by Grace Dent

My rating: 3 of 5 stars

An interesting twist on the usual high school drama. Yes there are still bullies and boys and girlfriends, but this time the girls are taking control. Banned from attending the hottest thing in rock since forever, they host their own concert and are suddenly the talk of the town. With two great surprises at the end of their concert, this is one rock contest nobody will soon forget.

Heaven is for Real: A Little Boy's Astounding Story of His Trip to Heaven and BackHeaven is for Real: A Little Boy's Astounding Story of His Trip to Heaven and Back by Todd Burpo
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

This book is fantastic all of the way around! It is a mind boggling story from the events of Colton's illness to his experiences in Heaven to the heartfelt, "average Joe" way the story is told: it was a book I could not put down. Todd opens his heart on these pages. He tells his story as if he is actually telling it to you, not just writing it for you. Phrases like "that was all my mind could handle at once" and "pastors aren't allowed to have weak moments" make him as human as if he was sitting in the chair next to you. The pure miracle of Colton's survival and the ordeal they all went through kept this mom in tears for chapter after chapter. Last, but certainly not least, the biblical accuracy of the things Colton relates will give you goose bumps and leave you aching for more and more information.

DEFINITELY A MUST READ!
The Battle of the Labyrinth (Percy Jackson and the Olympians, #4)The Battle of the Labyrinth by Rick Riordan

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

This fourth installment in the Percy Jackson series is as action packed as ever. I like the way this book took some unlikely heroes and gave them a chance to shine. I also like the way Riordan "modernizes" greek mythology, "The labyrinth has been growing on its own for hundreds of years" and the way he fits these stories into our real world, Percy was the eruption of Mt. St. Helens - really!

Read on dear friend. You will not be disappointed.

Amazing What's Available @ Your Library!

World Book Digital Libraries' Inventions and Discoveries is a really neat part of the online World Book Encyclopedia. And it's available FREE to you via our website. You can find it in the Teens section under Find an Article. Just look under Encyclopedias for World Book. The Digital Libraries are part of that. Here's the first page: http://www.worldbookonline.com/digitallibraries/inventions/home
Take a look. You can find the history of all kinds of things, like the toothbrush.
Or the fork. Here's a knife and fork from the 1600s. Doesn't it make you want to dig in? To World Book's Inventions and Discoveries, that is!

On this day in history...

1944, the Allied forces stormed the beaches at Normandy.

Confessions of a Teen SleuthConfessions of a Teen Sleuth by Chelsea Cain

My rating: 2 of 5 stars

This book is a quick and easy read. I was quite excited to read it as I was an avid Nancy Drew fan. Cain uses the same writing style as Keene to write this late-in-life memoir of Nancy Drew. I, however, did not like the book at all as she turned Nancy Drew into an incredibly dis-likable person. She was arrogant and unkind and generally devoid of common sense.

Scrabble and Happiness

Moving around all the time isn't the worst of it for Ambrose. Being the victim of a bullying prank where he almost dies of an allergic reaction . . . that's the worst so far. Now his mother wants to pack up and move again, just when Ambrose has made a new friend-- his upstairs neighbor Cosmo. True, Cosmo's an ex-con. But like Ambrose, he also loves Scrabble.

Do word nerds like Ambrose get to find acceptance anywhere? And maybe even happiness? Word Nerd is a novel by Susin Nielsen. The Newport Public Library owns a copy, so it's waiting for you!
