Touch Blue
b
y Cynthia Lord

Never whistle on a boat.

A rainbow means change is coming.
It’s bad luck to change a boat’s name.
If you write your wish beneath the stamp on a letter, the letter will carry the wish with it.
Start your journey with your right foot and good luck will walk with you.
Touch Blue and your wish will come true.
"Why take chances?" says eleven-year-old Tess Brooks. "Especially when it's so easy to let the universe know what you want by touching blue or turning around three times or crossing your fingers."
But Tess is coming to know that it's not always that simple.
The state of Maine plans to shut down her island's schoolhouse, which would force Tess's family to move to the mainland—and Tess to leave the only home she has ever known. Fortunately, the islanders have a plan too: increase the numbers of students by having several families take in foster children. So now Tess and her family are taking a chance on Aaron, a thirteen-year-old trumpet player who has been bounced from home to home. And Tess needs a plan of her own—and all the luck she can muster. Will Tess's wish come true or will her luck run out?

Adventure and Intrigue, with a Steampunk and Darwinist Twist

Leviathan (Leviathan, #1)Leviathan by Scott Westerfeld

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Westerfeld is a master of the action-adventure yarn, to which this "alternative history" of the beginning days of World War I (The Great War) attests. German Clankers, steampunk wonders of ammo-loaded machinery that help the Germans wage war, and British-Darwinist fabricated creatures such as the vast, living, flying dirigible-like airship Leviathan play roles in the drama as vivid as the main characters. There's much to entertain, and much to feed the imagination here: Aleksander, son of the murdered Austro-Hungarian Prince Ferdinand, is being held captive (or saved from harm, depending on one's perspective) in an abandoned castle amid the vast frozen wastes of the Alps. When he sees Deryn Sharp's mighty airship Leviathan fall to earth and land on a glacier, he knows he must intervene to help save the crew, despite the risk of revealing his identity and the possibility of being taken by enemy forces. There are plot twists aplenty here. For one, airman Deryn is not what "he" seems, being a girl disguised as a boy. With both of them hiding parts of their identities, the sparks fly when Alek and Deryn's paths cross. This first intallment of the series leaves readers wanting to learn more about WWI, but especially to re-enter the fantastical world that Westerfeld has built around those true and harrowing years.Leviathan

The Last Olympian (Percy Jackson and the Olympians, #5)The Last Olympian by Rick Riordan

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Fantastic ending to an exciting series! So many of our old "friends" return and the assortment of different and terrible monsters is quite exciting. If you are a fan of Percy, Rachael Elizabeth Dare, AnnaBeth and Grover, you'll zip through this final installment of the series. There are new terrors and new warriors around every corner and a VERY unexpected hero. ENJOY!

How to Take the Ex Out of Ex-BoyfriendHow to Take the Ex Out of Ex-Boyfriend by Janette Rallison

My rating: 3 of 5 stars

Giovanna's brother Dante decides to run for student body president after having a disagreement with BMOC, Wilson, the mayor's son, over whether or not to memorialize a dead classmate. Giovanna has to work on twin brother, Dante's, campaign - he is after all her brother - and she assumes her boyfriend Jesse will too, until he doesn't. Why is Wilson having clandestine meetings with the underside of society all the while flirting with anything in a skirt to get votes? Why did Jesse choose Wilson over and Dante? And why did Dante change his mind the day before his big election speech? Peppered with disasterous blind dates, an "evil" stepmother and typical high school misha mash, this is an entertaining, though not mentally challenging story.

Book Trailers!

After Ever After
b
y Jordan Sonnenblick

Jeff has passed the five-year mark. He's free. Cancer-free. When he was four years old, Jeff was diagnosed with leukemia. His hair fell out, he threw up a lot, and he went through different kinds of treatment in order to be cured. Now that Jeff is cancer-free, he can finally live a normal life and hopefully not be considered just "The Boy with Cancer."
8th grade gets off to a great start. He meets Lindsey, a beautiful new transfer student from California. And Jeff is shocked to find out that she actually likes him. Not just as a friend, but as something more! And he has a bunch of classes with his best friend Tad, who's also a cancer survivor.
Of course, not everything is perfect. Jeff spaces out at school because of his cancer treatment and walks with a limp. His big brother Steven, who was always there for him, has dropped out of college and moved to Africa. And Jeff is still terrible at math.
Then the bad news arrives ... Every 8th grader is being forced to take a state-wide standardized test. If Jeff doesn't pass that test, he won't move onto high school with his girlfriend and best friend.
But Tad and Lindsey have a plan to make sure that Jeff doesn't fail the test. This plan is so big, so secretive and so crazy that there is no way it will work. . . will it?
Read After Ever After by Jordan Sonnenblick so you can find out if they pull off the plan of the century!
