How to Choose Your Next Book . . . Using a Website

What to read? Lots of books, but which one's right for you right now? Tamar Zmora of Boston.com has created a list of excellent book-selection websites that are easy to use, fun to visit, and inspiring for book lovers. Here are a few of her suggestions:
  1. GoodReads: a hugely popular site with book groups, publishers, and individual readers. Looking for a genre list, or how others' rated a book? This is site's for you!
  2. What Should I Read Next? Pure fun. Type in the title of the latest book you read and loved, and up pops a list of similar books. If you're into making lists, this site's addictive.
  3. Whichbook: This site picks a book based on your current mood. Are you optimistic or pessimistic right now? Want loads of sex in your next steamy read, or very little, or none? Move the scale, click "GO" and Whichbooks comes up with ideas!
We'll add a few more booklovers' sites next week. Stay tuned!

Guy Langman, Crime Scene ProcrastinatorGuy Langman, Crime Scene Procrastinator by Josh Berk
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

What a great change of pace for YA literature! It's still a boy on the journey to manhood, but who can take someone seriously whose special talent is being lazy? Guy's best friend Anup convinces him to join a four-ensics club during which Guy's house is broken into and his dead father's sunken treasure is stolen - really! Who knew there would be a real dead body for the final? Guy has a brother? And will his book of "dad-isms" make the best seller list or just help him let go? Read on a find out. This is a quick read with lots of lightness and a few deep thoughts and as I said a great shift from the usual teen lit on the reading lists today. Enjoy.

SplitSplit by Swati Avasthi

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

I picked this book up and put it back down many times before actually reading it.  It is difficult at times, but ultimately very well done.  I found myself frustrated at Christian's and Jace's lack of willingness to connect, but I think Avasthi did a very good job of connecting readers with their mindset and ultimately I understood why they did some of the crazy things they did.

Christian and Jace are both characters that will make you angry both at them and for them. They will frustrate you and they will draw you in and make you route for their survival both physically and emotionally.

The book ends on a hopeful note, but realistically leaves you knowing they still have a long way to go.  One reviewer said "there are no true villains [except their dad] and no true heroes in this book, except maybe Miriam".  There are just real people and that is what makes it such a roller coaster ride.

It is ultimately an excellent book and if you can stand the subject matter - spousal/child abuse and the ramifications - I highly recommend it.

Abandon (Abandon Trilogy, #1)Abandon by Meg Cabot

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

OMG!  I CAN'T WAIT FOR UNDERWORLD!

I can't figure out what kept pulling me to this book, but I just had to find out Who is the mystery man?  Is he good or bad?  What did Pierce do in her last school?  Will John hurt? Help her? Love her? Kill her?  Where exactly was she while dead?  How did she get back?  Pierce is a bit dense at times and she does keep stumbling into trouble, but I suppose that is true of most teenagers.  John is totally mysterious and we don't learn much about him until the very end which makes for a lot of anticipation.  I truly had no idea where this book was going and loved finding out.  It just sucked me in and kept me there.  I'd be surprised if it doesn't do the same for you.

LOVE MEG CABOT!
