Do American Teens Know Anything?
A recent video produced by a teen, and broadcast on the Internet newspaper The Huffington Post, asked teens on the street at lunchtime to answer a few basic questions about United States government and history. The first question was: Do you know who is the vice-president of the United States? No teens interviewed answered correctly. The video interviewer then asked teens: In what war did America gain its independence? Without a hint, no teen answered correctly. What else could teens not answer? Those interviewed couldn't name the countries that border the U. S.
A 2010 National Assessment of Education Progress survey revealed that only 9% of fourth graders could identify a picture of Abraham Lincoln and give two reasons for his historic importance.
What do you think? Are kids and teens learning enough history? Should something be done? Any ideas what?

The Son of Neptune by Rick RiordanMy rating: 3 of 5 stars
As always, I am deeply impressed with Riordan research of Rome, Roman ways and Roman gods. He must have a deep interest, almost obsession, with all things ancient.
In this installment, we revisit our old friend Percy Jackson, but he is in a whole new world. Gia has opened the doors of death and now monsters will not stay dead, no matter how many times you kill them. Pursued by harpies and carrying Juno on his back, Percy arrives the Roman camp in California exhausted and confused - Juno has wiped his memory. Romans are not as welcoming as Greeks, but Percy manages to proves himself by arriving with Juno and saving the gate guards upon entry; Romans who quickly become his closest allies. Percy has no memory, Frank and Hazel have deep secrets of their own creating uncertainty and insecurity to rule their lives. But the camp is facing certain annihilation unless this trio of heroes can find themselves and kill one bad *@# giant; and fast!

Jessica Rules the Dark Side by Beth FantaskeyMy rating: 3 of 5 stars
Reading this book, you forget that they are only 18. Lucius, groomed to lead, was probably never a child, but Jessica does a great deal of growing up in this one. They make some tough decisions and stand strong for all that they believe in.
I like the threshing out of new characters and the background we get on Lucius. This book ends with a definite set up to book three, but is eventful by its own merit too.

White Cat by Holly Black
In this first book in the Curse Workers series, workers have the illegal magical ability to control other people's dreams, memories, emotions, and sometimes even their death. One curse ability to each worker. But the curses are not without consequences for those who use them. It's called blowback, so enacting a curse takes a major toll on the workers themselves. Cassel Sharpe, the narrator of the story, is from a family whose other members have these powers. His mother, for instance, is an emotion worker, meaning she can manipulate anyone to trust her, going through the steps of supposed real emotions so that the victim won't realize the curse is being worked on them. Then she can con them, tricking them into believing and feeling just about anything she wants. Similar powers result in equally insidious results. Is everyone out to find a "mark" and, as Cassel puts it, "screw someone over"? Cassel would like answers, but he has a dark secret of his own that haunts him and inhibits his search for the truth. He has murdered a girl, and his family is helping him to hide the fact. Or did he? This is a dark, cynical look at family life, school life, and relationships. Told in first person present tense, it's also a mesmerizing story.

Clockwork Prince by Cassandra ClareMy rating: 4 of 5 stars
My first introduction to steam punk. I like it! Clare weaves a beautiful story, leaving me eager for the sequel - thank goodness it was just published :-)
Poor, innocent Tessa thought she was coming to England to start a new life with her bother. Instead she encounters a world she never believed existed and secrets about her bother, her father, her mother and herself she never wanted to know. Embracing a new family; Tessa is dying to know what she is, Will is dying to rid himself of a terrible secret, and Jem, well Jem is just plain dying. Follow them as they battle evil and themselves in Clockwork Angel with Charlotte, Henry, Sophie and Jessamine, they are a unique family in more ways than one.
