The Drowned Cities

This is an action-packed thrill ride that accompanies the author's book "Ship Breaker" (which I have not yet read). The world is at war, and in Asia two groups are looking to overcome each other. Mahlia and Mouse are two kids stuck in the middle, just trying to survive. When Mouse gets taken as a soldier recruit against his will, Mahlia must decide what friendship and loyalty really mean to her, and what is worth living or dying for.

City of Fallen Angels (The Mortal Instruments, #4)City of Fallen Angels by Cassandra Clare
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

I'm done with the whole "Clary and Jace are desperately in love, but Jace always has a reason they can't be together." Geez Jace, trust her already or move on. And Clary, if he is adding that much stress to your life, take a break and let him get his act together.

So yes, Clary made a bad judgement call by keeping Jace's reincarnation a secret. Now Jace will pay a huge price and Simon may pay the ultimate price despite the mark of Cain. Clary is the key to it all.

The twists and turns in this one would be very exiting if I wasn't so annoyed by the repetition of the Clary/Jace drama. The series is good, so it is probably worth reading, but I think I'm ready for a break.

Explosive Eighteen (Stephanie Plum, #18)Explosive Eighteen by Janet Evanovich
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Stephanie goes to Hawaii. Stephanie returns from Hawaii with a white band of skin around the third finger of her left hand. Morelli and Ranger return from Hawaii bruised and battered.

Oh yeah, Stephanie also returned from Hawaii with criminals both international and local following her and trying to kill her.

Say what?!

As always, Evanovich delivers with humor, quick quips, unexpected twists and turns and some madcap bounty hunting. ENJOY!

The Boy RecessionThe Boy Recession by Flynn Meaney
My rating: 2 of 5 stars

When most of the eligible bachelors at Whitefish Bay high school transfer to private schools, the remain boys suddenly find themselves in very high demand. There are four girls to every guy and seniors have prom on their minds. One enterprising young man makes it rich, some take advantage, and some suddenly find themselves thrust into a limelight they never wanted.

Interesting concept. Told from alternating male and female viewpionts, this book is an average read. If you are tired of the same old same old, definitely give it a try. If you are looking for something to keep you glued to the pages, move on.

Introducing Ms. Colleen ...

Hi Everyone!

I just wanted to quickly introduce myself ... my name is Ms. Colleen, and I am the new YA Librarian here in Newport. I am THRILLED to be joining Ms. Becky in our quest for all things YA related!

A little background ...

I graduated from URI's library program, specializing in Youth Services. I currently also work with the smaller kids in Portsmouth Public Library "down the road" a ways. I am also a member of the Rhode Island Teen Book Award committee, so if you have any suggestions on awesome new books you have read, please pass them along!!

I hope to get to meet all of you and learn your names - please stop by and introduce yourself! Our goal in 2013 is to really make the Young Adult area YOUR area. We want you to have fun here, relax, and enjoy yourselves! We can help with whatever you need, whether it is with homework, a book suggestion or for informational purposes.

~ Ms. Colleen

Review: Chopsticks

A fabulously unique twist on a graphic novel! Using real photos and pieces of memorabilia, a story about a young couple's relationship unfolds. It is quickly read, though the images are a bit haunting and will stick with you for awhile! Easily read in one sitting; this book will also possibly be on the 2014 Rhode Island Teen Book Award roster.
