Rhode Island Teen Book Award

Have you participated in our RITBA vote before? If not, this year is your chance! There are a TON of great titles up for nomination. Here's the deal:

Read ANY 3 of the books on the nomination list, and that makes you eligible to vote. Read them last year? 6 months ago? 6 weeks ago? Doesn't matter! As long as you have read 3 of them, you can submit a ballot! You can only choose ONE book on the list as your winner. Ballots can be submitted from January 2 through February 28th in the ballot box in the YA department here at Newport Library.

Sorry parents! This is FOR TEENS ONLY! Encourage your kids to vote!

Haven't read any of the books and not sure where to start? Ms. Colleen is on the committee and has read almost all of the books herself, so she can give you some recommendations based on what you like to read. The committee tries to include a little of everything to reach all reading tastes - realism, graphic novels, adventure, fantasy, dystopian fiction, historical fiction, sci-fi, etc. There is something for everyone!

Join Ms. Colleen on Thursday, January 31st at 4:30pm to compare and contrast the book and the movie.  What's different?  Which one is better?  Will you see the sequels?

Don't Be Board Games

TEENS are invited to the Newport Public Library Teen Department throughout the week of January 14th - 19th to challenge themselves with crosswords and Sudoku puzzle or challenge their friends to a variety of board games.  Games will be out in the teen department all week.

Teens Reading to Tots for fun and community service credit

Teens are being recruited (and trained) to read aloud to 5 to 8 year olds at a 30 minute long, pajama time story “hour”.

Teens are encouraged to contact the YA department if interested: nptya@newportlibraryri.org or 847-8720 ext. 206. A one hour training and scheduling session will be held from 7-8pm on Monday, January 14.  Teen readers will be scheduled for a portion of 16 subsequent Monday evenings between January 14 and May 20.  The number of evening each teen will be asked to read is dependent upon the number of interested readers.  You must be committed to the program to participate.  Our young listeners get very excited about this time and depend upon you to be there.
Additional information, ground rules and applications are available on-line or at the Young Adult Reference Desk and are due January 9.  Readers in last year’s program were able to use this time to fulfill school required community service hours.
We’ll look forward to seeing you there!

Reached by Ally Condie

A quick read and very enjoyable! A solid conclusion to the series, Condie has not neatly wrapped up the Society nor the Rising's issues, but has provided a somewhat realistic ending to a series that I couldn't imagine how it would end. Cassia, Ky, and Xander must now work together to find a cure for the Plague that has been released upon the citizens. Not knowing which amongst themselves may have the Plague or who may be immune, the relationships between these three finally comes to a head while trying to work through their situation. While I cannot remember much of "Crossed" (book 2), fans of Matched will enjoy the ending to the story of the girl who starts to question authority. A worthwhile read if you enjoyed the first one and stuck with the second!

Book Review - Croak

A very interesting look at death. This is a fantastic, darkly twisted funny novel about a high school girl that discovers she is a Grim. She channels her self-destructive behavior into being a "Killer" (releasing the souls of the dead as soon as they die). She has to face some morality issues and make some tough decisions, all while trying to fit in in a new place with a new group of kids. Her relationship woes will make the reader laugh, but the dark subject matter and well-written story keep it from being snarky and unbelievable. Highly recommended! I cannot wait to read the sequel "Scorch", which is on order for the NPT library now!

Room Decor Open Studio

Teens spice up your digs!  This Saturday, at 10:30 in the program room, wooden wall hangings of the festive and not festive variety will be offered with paints, glitters, stickers and more.  Snacks too!  Don't miss out!

Stuff To Do at the Library - We're looking at YOU. There. On the computer!

Okay everyone, here's the deal! We want to get you guys into the library for some of our programming - DON'T WORRY! Not all of it is based around books (but obviously some is). Check out some of the stuff we have planned - and if you don't like the ideas, LET US KNOW! We can change some things around so its stuff that you guys want to do and would show up for.

On December 11th, we are making some coffee mug cozies (you know, a nice handmade version of that cardboard Starbucks gives you when you get a hot coffee). On December 8th we have some things that you guys can decorate your rooms with, and during the 3rd week of the month there will be a "Zine" contribution area on our tables behind the computers. That one is a drop in and you can do it when you stop by to use the computers anyway. We want to know what you want for Christmas - this is your chance to dream big!

Starting in January we have some really fun things going on. January 8th - come watch a movie with us, and bring your friends! We will be showing the 2012 release of "The Avengers" - along with serving free pizza, soda, and snacks. You can even text comments about the movie to the screen for everyone else to see. We'll also be breaking out our Wii games (yes, we have video games at the library!) for you and your friends to have a little friendly competition. Prizes for the winners! (And free food)

We are also trying to start a book club at the end of January (the 31st) and would love for you to come. We'll be discussing "The Hunger Games" - so whether you have read the book or seen the movie, come and talk about it with us. It's fun to compare the two! (Again, free food is always available!)

So that's what we have planned through January for you guys - we really hope that you will come to some or all of the programs. Let one of the YA librarians (Ms. Becky or Ms. Colleen) know if you have any questions - there is always someone here from 2-9pm Mon-Thurs. Unless we are eating dinner. We get hungry too.
