Trash by Andy Mulligan

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

As dump site boys, they've been picking trash since they could walk and probably will continue to pick trash until they are too old to climb the heaps. They live off what the find for food or to recycle for cash. Most of what they find is scat until one day they make "the big find". Their lives are about to get very dangerous, very exciting and in the end very happily ever after (for the most part) if they can survive that long.

I could not put this book down! It was like a train wreck; disturbing, but I had to find out what happens next so I kept reading. LOVE their finally solution for "the find"! And since most of the characters come out unscathed in the end, I can say that I actually liked it once I finished it.

Heat Wave by Richard Castle

My rating: 2 of 5 stars

I love the television series Castle so I was very excited to find this book. The series stays true to form although for some reason the writing inspired me to picture Rook less Nathan Fillion and more Danny DiVito and Nikki more petite than Stana Katic. Obviously Richard Castle is pseudonym for someone who wrote the books to build upon the popularity of the novel.
TV vs. Book technicalities aside, this is a fun story with a very interesting plot twist at the end. I can usually figure out "who done it", but not this time.

It's hot, brutally hot, in New York during the summer heat wave, but that doesn't stop murderers and thieves from striking out. Matthew Star has been tossed over the balcony of his 6th floor penthouse, but why? and by who? Was it the gangster found shot with a small caliber hand gun, the gold digging wife who continues to spend money hand over fist despite being flat broke, the jealous lover who claims he was good for her because she turned her life around when they broke up or someone else.... hmmm. I'll give you a hint... someone else, but who? Was it because he's broke, philandering obnoxious or just in the way... hmmm. I'll give you a hint.. the answer is here.

This is a quick, light read so pick it up and find out.

From Pottery Barn to Eternity: Reading the First in the Pretty Little Liars Series

Pretty Little Liars by Sara Shepard

Hmmmm. Lots of readers love this series. But to me it read more like a shopping list than a novel: "He rubbed his fingers over the cuff of a hung-up pair of Joseph trousers. She slid her Tiffany Elsa Peretti heart ring up and down her finger . . . Spencer's Sidekick vibrated . . . Emily struggled to operate her Nokia." Even when a body is identified by a ring, it's not just any ring: "She remembered Ali's white-gold initialed ring. Ali's parents had gotten it for her at Tiffany's . . ." As a memorial to the dear departed, there's "a smiling picture of Alison in a tight blue Von Dutch T-shirt and spanking new Sevens." For heaven's sake! Some of the issues faced by the four teen girls (the "liars") are handled well. Emily's questions about her sexual identity, Aria's infatuation with a teacher, Spencer's attraction to her older sister's boyfriend--such issues are all eminently worthy of serious fictional consideration. But those brand names dropped onto every page . . . from Pottery Barn to Eternity anyone?

Good Advice on How to Pick the Right College--the First Time

In a recent blog post in the education section of The New York Times, Lionel Anderson, an academic advisor at Temple University, wrote:

"Nearly one in three undergraduates who begin studying at a two- or four-year college will move on to at least one other institution in pursuit of a degree. That means, for one reason or another, a large share of students end up navigating the admissions process twice (if not several times), reorienting themselves to new campuses and negotiating the transfer and acceptance of their old credits."

Anderson goes on to point out that those who attend only one institution tend to graduate earlier (and therefore pay less tuition). And, as he writes, "What’s more, they develop stronger institutional ties, mentoring relationships, alumni/professional networks and, not least of all, friendships. Four years on campus yields a greater return on your investment than two."

Getting the college choice right the first time can clearly save a student money, and make for a better experience. Uncommon Criminals by Ally Carter

Katrina Bishop is a legendary teen thief who uses her powers for good. Yup, a good thief. Guided by the infamous Visiley Romani - a figure, not a man - she steals WWII relics stolen by the Nazis and returns them, via a third party (not Romani as far as we know), to their rightful owners.

Approached by an elderly woman and her grandson who claim they are victims sent to her by Romani (not his usual m.o.), Kat is asked to steal the Cleopatra Emerald; only 97 karats and rarely seen by anyone, never mind the public. Together with it's twin, the Anthony Emerald (also 97 karats) the stones are forbidden territory among the world of thieves for many reasons, not the least of which is "the curse". But Kat and her gang of teen thieves pull it off. However, Kat realizes, almost immediately after turning over the Cleopatra, that she has been conned. The perpetrator?, one Margaret Gray, con artist, role model, the future of Kat or maybe something worse. Romani's only comment: "Get It Back".

This one, like the original, is a true adventure that will keep you interested from the first to last pages!

This book is a sequel to Heist Society. While good as a stand alone story, reading Heist Society will give the story line and the characters a depth not achieved in this book alone. Carter writes deep characters and intricate story lines which are appropriate for teens of all ages. Yes, Kat and her crew are thieves, but this book is otherwise innocuous and could be recommended to teens of all ages.

Stephanie Plum quit the bounty hunter business, it can't be true!

With Lula taking over her job and past bad guys returning to stalk her, Stephanie isn't having much luck putting the bounty hunter life behind her. Ahh well... it all works out for Stephanie in the end, doesn't it? That's why we love her, a diamond in the raw with a lucky streak miles wide and two protective men watching out for her.

Baaabe!

As always, an entertaining read with laugh out loud moments and enough plot twists to keep it interesting. Evanovich does not disappoint in Eleven on Top.

Teenager Briony Larkin feels responsible for her twin sister Rose's mental incapacity, and for her stepmother's untimely death. That's a heavy load for a young girl to carry, and Briony copes with her feelings of profound guilt by periodically beating up on herself, both figuratively and literally, including cutting herself and offering her blood to the spirit world. This sounds like a completely contemporary problem, but author Franny Billingsley has cleverly set the story in quite another time and place--in an English country town called Swampsea at the beginning of the twentieth century. Sometimes it seems more like the twelfth or thirteenth century, with talk of witch hangings and resident ghosts called the Old Ones.

Billingsley's writing style could be called either highly evocative or overwrought, depending on one's taste. But the story unfolds with just enough suspense and romance to keep even the most skeptical readers enthralled. The entrance into the tale of beautiful, leonine Eldric, son of the man who plans to engineer the drainage of Swampsea's swamp, adds more than a frisson of romance. It also adds another level to the plot, making us think that perhaps Briony's memories of her loving stepmother need a bit of revising. This, it turns out, is a tale of visions and revisions. And learning to avoid making the Boggy Mun unhappy is not the only lesson Chime has to teach.

I Love Him to Pieces by Evonne Tsang

My first foray into graphic novels....

So I read that in about 40 minutes. I got the storyline, but I'm sure I missed some of the deeper meanings of things. Great first novel for those of you looking to explore graphics: short and easy to follow. You don't have to fill in a lot of the blanks.

Oh, a summary well, girl meets boy through class project, girl and boy go on a date, boy gets infected with zombie mind eating fungus while they fight their way through a city of zombies, boys parents - famous doctors - cure him of fungus and everyone lives happily ever after. Oh yeah, spoiler alert because that isn't a classic story line or anything :-)

Reading Lord of the Rings Again

If you haven't had the unforgettable pleasure of reading J. R. R. Tolkein's fantasy masterpiece, The Lord of the Rings, the long, dark days of winter might be just the time to take on the adventure!

One of Newport Public Library's teen librarians has decided, after a hiatus too long to calculate, to re-read the beloved trilogy. She has just finished the first book, The Fellowship of the Ring, and after all those years, Tolkein didn't disappoint. Within moments of picking up the book, she was back again in the world of Bilbo Baggins and his eleventy-first (111st, that is) birthday celebration at his home of Bag End. Bilbo had quietly possessed the Ring for many years. But the time had come for him to pass on the daunting responsibility of this strange, mysterious gem. His wizard friend Gandalf had convinced him to leave the ring to his nephew and heir, Frodo. And Bilbo had agreed--until the moment to hand over the ring actually came. That is when the perverse power of the ring becomes crystal clear, as it turns even Bilbo's kind and generous nature greedy, covetous, and grasping. The Angel of Death by Alane Ferguson

My rating: 3 of 5 stars

This book started out slow and dragged on for a while. I probably would not have finished it, except that I was dying to know what exactly killed the teacher and the dog. The state of thier bodies was so totally unusual: it was like they melted from the inside out.... Then about 2/3 of the way through it picked up and I flew through the ending, which was excellent, unexpected and very exciting! I knew going to a deserted cabin in the far off woods was a bad idea....

I don't regret reading it, but would not recommend it to persons with limited reading time.

The Lost Boy: A Foster Child's Search for the Love of a Family by Dave Pelzer

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

I looked to this book with hope and for answers to the many questions raised by A Child Called It. It did not deliver on either count. Peltzer focused on the trouble he made, the bad decisions he made and the hopelessness of that time in his life. Now, there is not doubt his transition and healing was a difficult and very long process, but I still would have liked to hear more about the positive times he had with his foster families, the things he worked through in therapy and some of the good that finally came into his life, as well as the difficulties. I'm sure there were still many hardships as an "F-child" and I think it is good to raise those points, but there had to be some good in those six years. Especially compared to the previous eight.

That said, I read it in one sitting which is saying something for the mother of a pre-schooler and a toddler. Peltzer's writing is so frank and the love you develop for in the first books keeps you deeply connected throughout this second book.

A Child Called "It" by Dave Pelzer

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Peltzer's wife says in A Man Named Dave, "I can testify that the events that have happened in Dave's life he has given to readers in bite-sized pieces.... But if it was revealed to people in full strength, it would blow their minds." Peltzer's little boy narrative was so intuitive and so horrible, I had to keep reminding myself he was so young. It does not seem the kind of thing such innocence could or should survive... and his innocence didn't. I took me years after my children were born to build up the emotional strength to read this book. I still don't know if I'm glad I did. left this book filled with hope... he was free and surely someone could love this poor child: though at 12 I'm sure not everyone viewed him as a poor child anymore.

After reading Three Little Words I looked into foster parenting. Sadly we do not have the required bed room space at this time. After reading Peltzer story, I am more convinced that I need to find some way to help.

Questions, questions: How could she? Why did she? Why just him? How could it go on so long without anyone noticing? Why didn't father take him when he left? How on earth did such a young child survive? Why didn't they take his brothers too? Did she turn on them when he left? Questions, questions...

The Red Blazer Girls: The Ring of Rocamadour by Michael D. Beil

I wish I could be a red blazer girl!

Unique teen mystery. The girls are seventh graders so it is quaintly simply yet Beil manages to include some interesting plot elements. Adorably seventh grade girl in tone and thought. An enjoyable story with a few not-so-scary math lessons thrown in ;-)

Once Upon a Time in the North by Philip Pullman

This prequel to Philip Pullman's classic fantasy trilogy, His Dark Materials, introduces some of the characters from those stories in this fast-paced short work. Set in the coastal Arctic town of Novy Odense, the drama quickly gets under way when 24-year-old Lee Scoresby, an airman from Texas who befriends Lyra Belacqua in later novels, lands there in a hot air balloon. With Scoresby is his "daemon," or animal spirit, Hester--everyone in this world has one. (Hester, by the way, discovers in the course of the tale that she's not a mere jackrabbit but a more interesting Arctic hare!) Scoresby is soon enmeshed in the intrigues of this frigid harbor town that resembles nothing so much as a frontier town from his own American Wild West. There's corruption in high places, shady business dealings, even a band of loitering vagrants. Icy Arctic temperatures don't freeze the action as Scoresby gets involved in a tense mayoral race and in helping a ship's captain get hold of his impounded cargo of valuable freight. Then there's those walking, talking Arctic bears that hang around town with little to do. There's even a heartbroken, weepy young librarian named Miss Lund to help out. Scoresby has his work cut out for him. Unfortunately, that work involves a considerable amount of gun violence. But the action will keep readers' attention and the fun of being introduced to Iorek Byrnison, the great white bear of later stories, is just part of this yarn's charm. You won't regret spending some time with Once Upon a Time in the North and master storyteller Philip Pullman.

"On this day in 1867, the first stock ticker is unveiled in New York City. The advent of the ticker ultimately revolutionized the stock market by making up-to-the-minute prices available to investors around the country. Prior to this development, information from the New York Stock Exchange, which has been around since 1792, traveled by mail or messenger.
The ticker was the brainchild of Edward Calahan, who configured a telegraph machine to print stock quotes on streams of paper tape (the same paper tape later used in ticker-tape parades). Dead Is Not An Option by Marlene Perez

Is Wolfie up to his old tricks again or something bigger going on? Who would have thought Count Dracul would be the one to make Circe play nice? I never would have fingered the right man for head of the Scourge? And a death in "the family" really caught me off guard. The end however still felt a bit anti-climatic (lowering my rating for 4 to 3 stars).

Perez delivers again with some good old fashion, true to high school characters and not so true to high school adventures in the paranormal town of Nightshade. I actually stayed up to finish this one and that is saying a lot since my two year old is getting up at 5 these days.

DJ Swank, "little" sister to two of Red Bend's most successful high school football players has discovered... she's a cow.

Brian Nelson, QB on their rival football team, has been ordered by his coach to help out in Swankville. He and DJ did NOT hit it off.

When her father was injured she quit basketball, buried all those college recruitment letters, and is now single handidly - mostly - running the Swank family dairy farm. Brian has been ordered to help with the haying, the milking, cleaning and painting the barn and whatever DJ has up her sleeve. Oh yeah, and SHE is supposed to coach HIM! When Brian points out that she "is a cow" because she does whatever she's told without question or protest, no matter what the sacrifice, he really ticks DJ off. He also gets her thinking. By the end of the summer, she decides she is not going to be a cow. [spoiler] SHE joins the football, reunites her family, gets her silent brother to talk and kicks Brian's butt all over the football field. But that isn't really important, this one truly is all about the journey.

Join DJ, Brian and the rest of the Swank family on this comical, insightful ride of a summer. You won't be bored, but you may end up wondering if you too... are a cow.

Claws and Effect by Rita Mae Brown

My rating: 2 of 5 stars

This book was "okay". She was a little repetitive on the character development, mentioning some facts 3 and 4 times. This is a slower paced mystery than most I've read, but that and the filler details gave it a small town feel that I liked. As for the mystery itself, I got a little lost in the details, but she pulled it together in a logical, easy to follow manner and included a few interesting twists and turns. I wouldn't recommend against this book, but there are others I'd recommend before it.

Hope in Patience by Beth Fehlbaum

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

WOW! I learned quite a bit about persons dealing with abuse: the ways the turn it in on themselves, things they let go; including some we should all practice letting go, they way they compartmentalize. I think the last surprised me the most. After years of abuse by a stepfather, she was still able to trust and love her biological father even letting him hug and console her and she was interested in attempting a relationship with a boy her own age. She was open with peers about her situation too and though it bit her in the behind at least once, it also gave her a support system to lean on. This was a very telling book, yet realistic. Her stepfather never went to jail, her mother never saw the light and she was not "all better" in the end; though she was moving in the right direction, an admission that these things take a long time, not just a year or even two.

This is a disturbing yet wonderfully told story.

It already sounds like a Hunger Games scenario at the outset; though most people compare it to The Giver which I've never read.

Cassia's rebellion is more mental than, physical. This book has a lot of insightful, thought provoking interludes, but little true action. I would definitely recommend it to teens looking for psychological novels. It is not, however, and action thriller.

This is a RI Teen Book Award nominee book.

Confessions of the Sullivan Sisters by Natalie Standiford

My rating: 2 of 5 stars

This book was okay. Standiford twists an interesting yarn, but it seems like she lost interest a little with each confession. The most intricate confession never felt like it was accompanied by remorse and the "winning" confession was simple and over something rather silly; a point she notes and defends within the story. She's right, dogs are living, breathing creatures who do not deserve to be mistreated, but to disown the whole family over it, really?

I would have loved to hear the confessions of Ginger and Daddy-O. I bet they could have some very interesting stories to tell.

I wouldn't recommend this book, but I wouldn't recommend against it if someone really wanted to read it either. I guess it was more of a disappointment than anything.

HPV and You

HPV (human papillomavirus) has been in the news a lot lately so it might be a good time to help teens understand what is being discussed when politicians debate HPV vaccines for young adults.

According to the Merck Manual (19th ed., 2011), an authoritative medical reference, HPV is a common sexually-transmitted virus that appears to be the cause of cervical cancer, which is the the 8th most common cancer among women in the U.S. Wikipedia states that 80% of American women will have contracted at least one strain of HPV by the time they are 50. Whatever one thinks of vaccinations against some strains of HPV, it is wise to learn about HPV, its prevention, diagnosis, and treatment, and especially its most serious outcome--cervical cancer.

To learn more, you can always visit the library, either in person or online. The "research" tab on our website will lead you to excellent online sources, including Medline and Health Source. You can also look at the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's website page on HPV at: http://www.cdc.gov/hpv/. This public health issue could affect you, and without doubt, knowledge is the best medicine!

The Lost Hero by Rick Riordan

My rating: 3 of 5 stars

This book is energetic, exciting and thought provoking. Riordan has done extraordinary research on both the Greek and Roman manifestations of these gods. He weaves the information seemlessly into a story that leaves you guessing at every corner. I am glad to see that these new characters are somewhat more trusting of each other than previous characters. And, I was happy to see some old faces too. Parts of the book are predictable, but overall the story is exciting and entertaining. Enjoy!

Sucks to Be Me: The All-True Confessions of Mina Hamilton, Teen Vampire by Kimberly Pauley

Love this book. It's a whole new take on the vampire theme. Mina is a typical teenager with a larger the life question to answer in a very short time. To be or not to be.... Stay with her parents - wait she can't do that - or stay loyal to her best friend. Oh and did I mention the TWO hot guys who have suddenly taken and interest in her. What is a girl (or is it vampire) to do? Mina's whole family was turned in very unorthodox ways and she has been a secret to the ruling council until quite recently. Now she has 1 month - ONE MONTH - to decide her fate for eternity. Oh and then there is the big question, now that they know she knows, what happens if she rejects immortality?

Hmmm, hmmm, hmmm....

Cammie Morgan's life at the Gallagher Academy for Exceptional Young Women is like lots of other teenaged girls' lives--full of tests, boys, friends . . . But wait, what if one of your best friends, Macey, is the daughter of a man running to be the vice-president of the U.S., your tests are about encryption and disguises, and the boys you know are all (perhaps) spies too? That's Cammie's real life, behind the disguise of her "normal" school, and it's an exciting one--sometimes a bit too exciting.

Cammie is both a believable teen girl, and a spy-in-training. This third in the Gallagher Girl series shows that spying can involve some pretty serious stuff, like seeing someone you love (her aunt, who's also a spy) get shot, going through an attempted kidnapping on the roof of a Boston hotel, or wondering where--and how--your father (also a spy) died. As Cammie and her other friends provide security for Macey, they begin to think that Macey wasn't the real target of the kidnapping attempt of the past summer. So who was?

This is a fast-paced, sometimes light, sometimes serious, portrayal of both modern life's public realm and its dangers and a teen's life, with all its ups and downs. Ally Carter is masterful at teen thinking and doing--even when the teen's a spy!

This is heisting at its best, and most elegant! Kat Bishop gets booted out of Colgan Academy, an exclusive private school, just in time to save her father from the hands of the evil mobster Arturo Taccone, who believes Kat's father has stolen five priceless paintings from him. Enter W.W. Hale the Fifth, Uncle Eddie, the beautiful Gabrielle, Simon, Angus, Hamish, and the new guy Nick. This den--more like a family gathering--of thieves finds a way to break into the most prestigious museum in London to set things right. This is just a blast of a book from beginning to end. Light but just right.

So much for escaping the wonderful world of theft. Can a crew of teenagers pull of the heist of the century? Only one other thief has ever gotten into The Henley and he didn't take anything out. Can they get four paintings out in time to save Kat's father from an evil worse than anything they've ever encountered? Even Uncle Eddie won't take on Taccone and he isn't afraid of anyone. But Kat must. Taccone believes her father has stolen something from him and will kill her father if they aren't returned.

Join Kat and her crew on this wonderful adventure story. I was amazed at the tricks up their sleeves.

Teen Summer Reading Program Final Party Coming Up!

"You Are Here" is about to wrap up! If you've joined the Teen Summer Reading Program, this is your last chance to be a winner! Just fill out the Teen SRP book forms for all those great books you've been reading (or listening to) this summer, and bring them in to the YA Department. Or email us at: nptya@newportlibraryri.org. Once you've completed 5 books and filled out the forms for them, you're eligible to be a part of the Grand Prize Drawing for a Sony E-Reader. All summer reading teens are invited to join us Tuesday, August 16, in the Library Program Room from 5:30-7:30 for our final movie of the summer reading series. Throughout the program we have traveled from continent to continent enjoying movies, snacks and activities from each one. In honor of our traveling theme, we will wrap up the program with Around the World in 80 Days. Admission, popcorn and soda are free.

Not registered for our summer reading program? Do it on-line now or in person Tuesday. You must read 5 books between now and August 17 to join us. If you do, you'll have access to tons of great programs and movies AND be eligible to win a Sony E-Reader.

Next Teen Summer Reading Event--Practice Your Haiku!

Teens, this week we'll be (imaginatively) visiting Japan, practicing haiku, an ancient poetic form, drinking tea, and eating ice cream! We'll be learning about the amazing possibilities that exist within the self-imposed boundaries of the haiku form. Contemporary English-language haiku are usually defined as short poems that consist of three lines, 17 or fewer syllables, a seasonal word or reference, and a cut, meaning an implicit juxtaposing of contrasting images or situations. Here's an example of haiku (in translation) by the Japanese haiku poet Kito (1741-89): In the open shop / Paperweights on picture books / New springtime breeze.

These short, evocative verses seem easy to write. But their simplicity is deceptive. It takes a lot of thought, practice, and inspiration to be a haiku master!

Do you think you'd like to try writing haiku? Or perhaps you'd like to draw or paint your poetic vision instead? There'll be plenty of opportunity to express yourself this week. Come to the Teen Summer Reading program this Thursday, August 11, 4-5 p.m. and visit Japan with us!

What a great opportunity to learn the art of watercolor! South County artist Pam Santos is coming on Thursday afternoon, August 4, 4-5 p.m. to teach a watercolor class to teens. You don't need any special skills--you don't even need to be good at art! Pam will teach you techniques to make your pictures stand out from the crowd!

"Why take chances?" says eleven-year-old Tess Brooks. "Especially when it's so easy to let the universe know what you want by touching blue or turning around three times or crossing your fingers."

But Tess is coming to know that it's not always that simple.

The state of Maine plans to shut down her island's schoolhouse, which would force Tess's family to move to the mainland—and Tess to leave the only home she has ever known. Fortunately, the islanders have a plan too: increase the numbers of students by having several families take in foster children. So now Tess and her family are taking a chance on Aaron, a thirteen-year-old trumpet player who has been bounced from home to home. And Tess needs a plan of her own—and all the luck she can muster. Will Tess's wish come true or will her luck run out?
